I bought a bike yesterday to resume my cycling career after a fifty year lay off. Boy, am I out of condition. Just riding back from the shop was a major effort. And then I tuned in to watch the Giro d'Italia to see scenes like these - guys finishing off a lung-bursting mountain time trial up the side of a ski slope, with gradients of 25% on the home stretch. That's one in four in old money.
