There was a dramatic stage in the Giro yesterday when the race favourites allowed a huge breakaway to gain up to 19 minutes advantage - and then couldn't pull them back. The result was that riders who the day before had been wallowing half way down the general classification suddenly found themselves propelled into race contention once again.
