The Barcelona chair was designed for the Ibero-American Exposition which was hosted by Barcelona, Spain in 1929. It was a collaboration between the famous Bauhaus architect Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and his longtime partner and companion, architect and designer Lilly Reich. The chair's design was inspired by the campaign and folding chairs of ancient times (campaign as in 'military campaign'). It has become a symbol of modernism, and now to the horror of purists and the delights of consumers, it is reproduced widely. For instance here for as little as £320 in the UK, and here for $350 in the USA.
