I've spent most of the summer on the Mediterranean coast — HERE. Hot days, non-stop sunshine, and a beautiful light quality which drenches everybody in a sense of well-being. And yet I enjoy being back in this north-west corner of the UK at this time of year. Why? Because it is the start of autumn; because there is a sense of renewal as schools, colleges, and (eventually) universities go back to work; because there are literary festivals, the last days of the Proms, and the start-up of autumn TV schedules. It provides a sort of rhythm to the year in harmony with seasons. Mind you - as soon as the crap weather starts again, I'm back off to where Picasso learned to see things clearly.
