The History and Power of Writing

I feel as if I have been reading The History and Power of Writing throughout the whole summer. It's a wonderful, encyclopedic study of writing and everything associated with it - books, literacy, printing, page design, typography, font sets, reading habits, even paper-making. Henri-Jean Martin takes the subject from the cave age to the computer, and documents every phase with exemplary scholarship. Anybody who takes a serious interest in the practice of writing needs to add this to their required reading. Literary enthusiasts should put it on their Must Do list. FULL REVIEW HERE
